In the fast-paced world of automotive collision repair, staying ahead requires more than quality workmanship. It demands vision, continuous investment and an unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction. These are the qualities that have shaped Quantum Coachworks, located in Hermanus Industria, into one of the Western Cape’s most respected accident repair centres.
The company’s journey took an exciting new direction in May 2015 when owner Org May acquired the business after an accomplished 25-year career with BASF – The Chemical Company. During his time at BASF, he spent the final five years as Managing Director of the South African Automotive Refinish Division, gaining invaluable experience in the collision repair and refinishing industry.
Quantum Coachworks itself had already established a solid foundation. The business was originally founded and successfully operated for approximately 13 years by its first owner before his retirement. However, when May took over, he recognised that significant changes would be needed to position the company for long-term growth. “At the time, Quantum Coachworks had no OEM vehicle manufacturer approvals and worked with only selected insurance companies,” he explains. “We knew we needed to invest heavily in upgrading both our facilities and equipment if we wanted to compete at the highest level.” That investment has paid dividends.
Today, Quantum Coachworks proudly holds an impressive 20 OEM vehicle manufacturer approvals, a testament to the company’s commitment to meeting stringent factory repair standards. The business now works with all major insurance companies, giving customers confidence that their vehicles are repaired according to manufacturer specifications using the correct processes, equipment and materials. Despite the technological advances that continue to reshape the automotive industry, one principle has never changed at Quantum Coachworks.
“Customer satisfaction is our top priority,” says May. “We also place tremendous value on our work providers and operate according to recognised industry standards, requirements and ethical codes of conduct.” The collision repair industry has changed dramatically over the past decade, with modern vehicles incorporating advanced driver assistance systems, lightweight materials and increasingly complex construction techniques. Keeping pace with these developments requires constant investment.
Quantum Coachworks regularly upgrades its equipment and ensures staff receive ongoing technical training to remain current with evolving repair methods and technologies.
This proactive approach allows the team to confidently repair today’s sophisticated vehicles while maintaining the highest levels of quality and safety. While technology plays a vital role, May believes the company’s reputation has been built on something even more valuable – trust. Customers continue to return because they know they can expect honest advice, friendly service and regular communication throughout the repair process. Combined with Quantum Coachworks’ commitment to delivering reliable, on-time, “first-time-right” repairs, these qualities have earned the business an enviable reputation throughout the Western Cape.
The company’s membership of the HALO Association further reinforces its commitment to excellence. Being part of an organisation that understands the realities of the collision repair industry provides valuable support and collaboration. “It allows us to work alongside other industry professionals to address common challenges and find sustainable solutions for the future,” May explains.
Like many businesses in the collision repair sector, Quantum Coachworks faces ongoing challenges. Increasing regulation, negotiating fair labour rates and maintaining sustainable service level agreements with certain work providers continue to place pressure on repairers. Nevertheless, the company remains focused on delivering quality repairs while adapting to an evolving marketplace.
Perhaps the strongest endorsement of Quantum Coachworks comes from its loyal customer base .”Our client retention numbers speak for themselves,” says May. “The constant repeat business from both our customers and their insurance brokers reflects the confidence they have in our workmanship and service.”
Looking to the future, Quantum Coachworks has no intention of standing still. Plans include expanding the facility as market conditions allow, investing in additional equipment and skilled technicians to support the rapidly growing electric vehicle market, and continuing to develop the next generation of industry professionals. “We are committed to always having at least one apprentice in both our panel and paint departments,” says May. “Qualified tradesmen are increasingly leaving for opportunities overseas, while fewer young people are entering the industry. Developing new talent is essential for the future of collision repair.”
With a clear vision, a highly skilled team and an unwavering focus on quality, Quantum Coachworks is well positioned to remain a trusted name in the Western Cape automotive industry for many years to come.
