Feel Good Feature – Planes, Trains & Automobiles ~ A railway modeller with a spectacular diorama in Brenton-on-Lake

Deep in the heart of Brenton-on-Lake lies a hidden treasure that not many are aware of. Brian Messenger, who owned a hobby shop in Cape Town for many years has retired and relocated his passion of all things hobby to his home in the Garden Route.

When you walk into the home, you will be forgiven for not knowing that a hidden treasure of time, skill and passion for railway modelling lay just behind the next door.

Brian’s love for model trains began at a young age, sparking a passion that has lasted a lifetime. It all started when he purchased a model railroad magazine at the age of 12, leading him down a path that would shape his career and his life.

Initially, his interest in model trains was limited by the expense of the hobby. However, once he started working in Port Elizabeth for Ford Motor Company at the age of 20, he was able to indulge his passion more fully. From that point on, Brian was fully immersed in the world of model trains, constantly seeking out new models and accessories to add to his collection.

In 1987, he took his hobby to the next level by launching a business importing model trains. This allowed him to share his love of the craft with others who shared his passion. In 1994, after leaving his postion as Regional Manager of Bosal Africa, he opened a retail store in Cape Town’s Bayside Mall, which quickly became a popular destination for hobby enthusiasts from all over the country.

The store in Tygervalley became known as the “go-to” spot for model train enthusiasts, with Brian himself always on hand to assist customers with their purchases and offer advice and tips for both new and experienced hobbyists. His knowledge and passion for the craft made him a trusted resource for anyone looking to expand their own collection or get started in the world of model trains.

Now, 53 years after first discovering his love for model trains, Brian is still as enthusiastic about the hobby as he was as a 12-year-old boy. His dedication to the craft has not waned over the years, and he continues to inspire others with his passion and knowledge.

Brian’s layout may not be the largest in terms of size, but it is certainly one of the most detailed and meticulously planned layouts out there.   His home layout is a converted single garage but it packs a punch when it comes to the intricacies of the model train world.

What sets Brian’s layout apart from others is the level of detail that he puts into every aspect of it. From the carefully thought out placement of each component piece to the realistic weathering that he applies to everything, This layout is a work of art in miniature form. The attention to detail is evident in every corner of the room, making it a joy for visitors to explore and admire.

The layout itself is a “shelf” type layout, set on two levels around the perimeter of the room. The upper level features the Cascade Creek logging operation and is a continuous loop, while the lower level, at bench height, forms a U shape around three sides of the room. Brian’s workstation is strategically placed against the fourth side, with turntables strategically positioned to allow for the locomotives to turn around for a return journey.

The layout is a testament to his passion for model trains and dedication to creating a realistic and immersive experience for anyone who views it. The careful planning and attention to detail that he puts into every aspect of the layout is truly commendable, and it shows in the final result. The layout is big on character and charm, making it a standout piece in the world of model train enthusiasts.

The little “extras” that add realism to the scenes on a model train layout are truly what bring it to life. From the seagulls perched around the harbour to the dog leaving its mark against a stanchion, these details make the layout feel dynamic and lived-in.  Additionally, the interior lighting in buildings helps to create an atmosphere of warmth and coziness. From the flickering light of a welding machine to the gentle glow of a campfire. The tar-paper patched roofs, ladder against a lamppost, and workmen busy putting up outdoor advertisements all serve to further enhance the sense of a world in motion.

One cannot help but admire the dedication and passion that he has put into his collections. Since he converted the room in 2017, he has spent an average of 5 hours per day (except weekends) working on his display.

Brian belongs to a group of 22 model train enthusiasts, the Knysna Model Railroaders, who get together once a month at a local hobby shop and discuss their progress with their own projects (a total of 9 model train layouts currently being built). This group have also built operating layouts which are on display to the public, one at the Knysna Waterfront and one in The Garden Route Centre in Knysna. The group can be contacted via their facebook page (Knysna Model Railroaders) or call Brian on 082 926 8770.

Brian’s lifelong love for model trains is a testament to the power of following one’s passion. His journey from a young boy with a model train magazine to a successful business owner and respected figure in the hobbyist community is a true example of how pursuing what you love can lead to a fulfilling and rewarding life.  “Its always a work in progress and a model train layout is never finished”, adds Brian. “My motto has always been – ‘your imagination is your only limitation”.
