KEEP BUGGIN’ FOR A CAUSE -The Wild Buggers Bring the ‘gees’ to Malmesbury

Sunshine, smiles, and a whole lot of heart – that’s what happens when passion meets purpose. The Wild Buggers Beach Buggy Club recently joined forces with the legendary Bok Radio HOOP Project to spread some serious ‘gees’ at the Goue Aar Old Age Home, and the result was nothing short of inspiring.

With engines revving and spirits high, the day kicked off at Groot Phesantekraal View in Durbanville, where a colourful convoy of VW air-cooled beauties gathered for their briefing. It was a petrolhead’s dream lineup – from pristine classic Beetles to rugged Baja Bug builds, each vehicle telling its own story. Crowd favourites included “The Wasp,” an eye-catching orange Salamander, and “The BumbleBee,” a bright yellow beach buggy, both powered by trusty 1600 VW Beetle motors. Unique builds like a Kestrel KartKraft with a wooden rear deck added an extra layer of charm and creativity to the already world-class display. But this wasn’t just about the cars – it was about community.

The Wild Buggers, a club open to anyone passionate about beach buggies, convertible Beetles, kit cars, Baja Bugs and all things VW air-cooled, had one mission: to make a difference. And thanks to their incredible members, sponsors, and the Bok Radio HOOP Project, they did just that raising an impressive R10,350. Their destination: Goue Aar Old Age Home in Malmesbury.

What they delivered went far beyond donations. Yes, there were bulk supplies of essential food, toiletries, and cleaning products but the real magic was in the personal touches. Each resident received a beautifully curated gift box, generously sponsored by Saint and Bloom Gifting. Even the hardworking staff were treated to thoughtful gift packs and gingerbread houses. Then came the highlight of the day – a proper South African braai. The “Ladybugs,” proudly sporting their official club shirts, took charge of the feast, serving up boerewors, fresh pasta salad, and plenty of smiles. It was a moment of warmth and togetherness, despite the chilly, wet weather. While the rain meant the residents couldn’t enjoy a spin in the buggies the team made sure no one missed out. They spent the morning handing out fresh fruit and HOOP Project care bags, connecting with residents and sharing genuine moments of joy.

Of course, no Wild Buggers adventure would be complete without a little roadside drama. On the way home, “The BumbleBee” needed a breather just as the heavens opened. But true to their spirit, the crew rallied together in the rain, got the engine going, and carried on proving once again that no Bugger gets left behind. The day wrapped up at Bossa Phesantekraal, where the team thawed out over a well-earned meal, celebrating not just a successful run, but the power of community and compassion. At its core, the Wild Buggers Beach Buggy Club is about more than just vehicles, it’s about fellowship, generosity, and keeping the spirit alive.
