Top Paints (Pty) Ltd was founded by Mr Willem F Kriel in 1971. Experience gathered from working in paint laboratories paved the way into the paint industry. Although Top Paints (PTY) Ltd was founded in 1971, the first paint was manufactured by Mr Kriel in 1969 on a farm near Kliptown south of Johannesburg.
As the demand for paint grew, Mr Kriel moved to a small premises in Industria North. Being born in Schoongezicht area near Kareekloof, Heidelberg, Mr Kriel later decided to return to the Vaal Triangle and make it his home base. During 1976 the present premises in Meyerton were built which were expanded during 2003. Since then the demand for factory space has increased and further expansions were completed during 2005, 2008 and 2013. In 2018 the business premises split into two divisions, water-based and solvent-based production. The solvent-based division moved into a new premises in 2018, which required further expansion in 2022 and was completed in 2024.

After 54 years of running the business in a very professional way as one of our country’s largest paint manufacturers, Top Paints never lost its character as a warm and friendly family business. Today, Mr Kriel Senior is still the lynchpin of the company, but is assisted by a number of very adequate family members such as his son, Willem (Jnr), who boasts internationally recognized qualifications in paint manufacturing. He mainly handles the company’s marketing while his wife Benita is involved in Finance, his sister Annelize Horn in procurement; and his brother-in-law Cornè Horn in logistics.
