Ronwic Motors in Ottery recently celebrated their 50 year anniversary in July 2024. The event was attended by clients, friends, and honored guests, including the Mayor of Cape Town, Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.
The celebration kicked off with a heartfelt speech from Mr Tim Wichman who expressed his appreciation to the contribution of various individuals over the years.
From humble beginnings, Ronwic Motors (formerly known as Ronmic) originally started operation in November 1974 – a new chapter for the Wichman family, Ronnie Wichman, along with his partner Michael, embarked on a journey that would shape their family’s future.
Before Ronwic came into existence, Ronnie was working as a motor mechanic, fixing cars such as beetles, minis and other vehicles from that era at a rented house with a double garage in what is now Chinatown. However, zoning issues forced him to find a new location to continue his work. After a period of uncertainty, Ronnie stumbled upon a brand new petrol station with a house and workshop on Strandfontein Road near Zeekoeivlei. With determination and a dream in mind, he reached out to the owner, secured a lease, and officially began the Ronwic story.
The early years of Ronwic were not without challenges. Ronnie and his wife, Alison, poured their hearts and souls into building the business from the ground up. They faced financial constraints and long hours of hard work, but their perseverance and unwavering dedication paid off.
As the years passed, Ronwic evolved into a well-established name in the automotive industry. The business grew, thanks to the Wichman family’s commitment to quality service and customer satisfaction. Ronnie’s expertise as a mechanic and Alison’s support as a business partner were instrumental in the success of Ronwic.
Their son, Tim Wichman, joined the team in 1995 as a panelbeater and over time, Tim slowly started taking on more responsibilities and eventually began running the business alongside his father.
In 2009, Ronwic Motors moved to their current premises in Ottery, a move that allowed the business to grow and expand. With Tim at the helm, Ronwic Motors continued to thrive and became a well-known name in the industry.
Sadly, Ronnie Wichman retired and passed away in 2013 at the age of 78. His passing was a great loss to the family and the business, but he left behind a wonderful legacy that is Ronwic Motors. Tim has continued to run the business with the same passion and dedication that his father had, ensuring that Ronwic Motors remains a trusted name in the community.
I am proud of our long serving staff who have helped us all these years to get to where we are today, without them it would not be possible, adds Tim. “These dedicated employees have played a crucial role in the success of the business, and I am grateful for their hard work and loyalty. Without them, Ronwic Motors would not be where it is today.”
Overall, Ronwic Motors is a shining example of a successful family business that has stood the test of time. Ronnie Wichman’s legacy lives on through Ronwic Motors, and his family is committed to carrying on his vision for many years to come.
Overall, the 50 year anniversary celebration of Ronwic Motors was a resounding success. It was a time to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and look forward to the future. The event was a testament to the strong relationships that have been built over the years and the continued support of the loyal customers who have made Ronwic Motors a cornerstone of the Ottery community. Here’s to another 50 years of success and prosperity for Ronwic Motors!.
