Resistance Customz – Changing Lives and Empowering Their Community

From humble beginnings in 2018, out of a home garage, Resistance Customz Garage was borne through the passion and commitment of Preston Hess.

His passion for cars and his fascination in their intricate designs trace back to his early days of building cars in his parents yard in 2009, his bedroom always adorned with car posters, badges and countless car magazines.

Through his hard work and participation in his community, fate led him to Pastor Craven Engle who runs a resource centre at Camp Joy in Strandfontein. Amongst other things, the Resource Centre assists with rehabilitation and motivation for individuals. Upon sharing Preston’s vision with the Pastor, an instant connection was formed and a collaboration began between Preston and the Resource Centre.

Camp Joy Resource Centre shares a belief in the possibility of change and the importance of imparting skills to individuals, enabling them to contribute positively within their communities.

Recognising the scarcity of positive role models in the community, they realised that Resistance Customz would allow them the opportunity to employ rehabilitated and reformed skilled workers within the automotive industry thereby creating a ripple effect through skill acquisition and empowerment. “Once you are able to change their attitude, you give them purpose and goals which ultimately changes their lives”, says Preston.

Currently, the main focus at Resistance Customz is panelbeating and spraypainting and all electrical, mechanical and upholstery work is outsourced. However, they hope to have all these services available under one roof in the near future.

To fully realise their vision, acquiring proper equipment is essential, ensuring optimal training conditions for individuals including reformed gangsters and recovering addicts who seek to transform their lives through skills development.

Preston continues, “I firmly believe that change begins with the individual and, by fostering personal growth, we can collectively drive meaningful change in our communities”.

Along with a friend, a podcast network – The Preston & Jovan Show – was initiated and is closely linked to the workshop, The podcast provides a platform for documenting progress and soliciting support from the communities through social media.

“None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of my wife who has been my rock through every endeavour”, he continues. “Change is possible, everyone deserves a second chance”.
